Winter is here but that doesn't mean we won't be riding
Thursday, May 12, 2011

Winter it appears has arrived with typical Canberra speed and panache. The leaves are all but gone, snow is visible on the mountains and the frost is thick.  That being said, Canberra is still a magical place to ride your bike. We will still be going on our famous Monday night rides (email bc@bcact.com.au for information on our rides). We will still be enjoying the weekends and we will still be seen out riding when ever we can.

There are some important things to remember for riding in Canberra on cold winter days:

1. Protect your hands, feet and ears. Good quality gloves, shoe covers and ear warmers are priceless.

2. Be careful of black ice. Riding in the early mornings after rain or fog can be very dangerous and care should be taken at all times. We recommend fitting wider tyres with deeper treads to give you a little more grip.

3. Days are shorter. If you plan on going out early in the morning or late in the afternoon it is highly likely it will be dark for all or most of your ride. Good lights will not only make your ride safer it will make it considerably more fun as you can see what's ahead of you!

3. Try Mountain Biking. Mountain Bike riding can be done all year round and the cold does not impact you as severely as it does on the road.

4. Rug up properly, get out there and enjoy your bike. Canberra winters are cold but that's no excuse not to ride your bike. Riding warms the heart and soothes the soul. There is nothing better then feeling the freedom of riding your bike, the wind in your hair and fresh air in your lungs. Embrace winter, enjoy the seasons.

If you are still struggling to get on your bike why don't you drop by, ask nicely and we will make you a coffee that should get the sparks going.

Keep riding
